Following a personal recommendation from the Surgeon Oculist to HM The Queen, Mr Pasu is able to see and treat his private patients at King Edward VII's Hospital, Marylebone London.
He also sees private and NHS patients at the East Sussex Healthcare Trust and The Spire Sussex Hospital.
Mr Saruban Pasu BSc (Hons) MBBS MD(Res) FRCOphth is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (Eastbourne & Bexhill) and The Spire Sussex hospital.
His London based private practice operates through King Edward VII's Hospital, Marylebone, where he is the lead ophthalmologist for the Macular treatment service. King Edward VII’s Hospital has a long-held tradition of being ‘by invitation only’, hand-picking the consultants who are granted practising privileges to treat their patients.
Education
Mr Pasu completed his schooling at the prestigious Perse School, Cambridge and graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine in London. His extensive and comprehensive ophthalmology training was in London, namely at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Imperial College. Mr Pasu was selected to complete his subspecialty training in Medical Retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital. During this time he developed a keen interest in complex cataract surgery and took an active and passionate role in teaching junior eye surgeons.
He spent two years of his training fully dedicated to research at Moorfields Eye Hospital London and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, which lead to the award of a postgraduate doctorate degree MD(Res). His research has made it possible for patients to make a more informed decision regarding macular hole surgery and is applicable on an international scale.
Ophthalmic treatments
His areas of expertise include Cataract Surgery with intraocular lens insertion. Privately he is able to use Premium intraocular lenses to reduce the need for reading and distance glasses following the surgery.
Other interests include managing disorders of the Retina including vein occlusions, diabetes and age related macular degeneration. He is able to perform Retinal and YAG laser, as well as Intravitreal injections. He has a strong academic interest having published extensively in medical journals, and has presented his work at international meetings.
Awards and Positions
Mr Pasu was awarded a 2020 Clinical Excellence Award for his contribution to the delivery of safe and high-quality care and the improvement of NHS services.
He is the current Medical Advisory Committee Ophthalmology representative at The Spire Sussex Hospital, responsible for ensuring the team continue to provide the highest quality service.
He currently supports the England Rugby Team Doctors with specialist ophthalmology input and care when necessary.
Mr Pasu is the Clinical Lead for the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme for East Sussex, and has overall clinical responsibility and accountability for the entire programme. He has regular meetings with NHS England representatives to ensure all diabetics receive the highest level of eye care.
As well as continuing to publish in reputable medical journals, Mr Pasu is a keen and respected educator. He is a Senior Lecturer for King's College London, and enjoys being a surgical trainer for junior doctors at his local trust in East Sussex.
Prior to moving to south coast with his wife and two young children, he was a Consultant Ophthalmologist for Imperial College in London, specialising in Cataract surgery and disorders of the Retina.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a Member of the Royal Society of Medicine.
Mr Pasu has been described as a compassionate, forward thinking and safe surgeon who prides himself on the high quality of his work.
